Beyond the
Salty Rim
By Katherine E. Hill
In its purest form, with fruit or
with a floater. Blended or on the rocks. With or without salt.
There’s no wrong way to order a margarita, especially at Si
Amigos, boasting the “Best Margaritas in Town.”
“A big part of it is the mix that
we use. It’s what makes the margaritas taste they way they do,”
says Martin Ruelas, co-owner of Si Amigos.
The mix is a well-kept secret that
has been perfected over the years, says Ruelas, who moved to
Reno more than four years ago to open Si Amigos.
“It’s a special recipe, a secret
recipe. We tried to make it with some other mix, but is was not
as good,” he says of the special mix.
But the mix isn’t Si Amigos’ only
trick. The restaurant also has 32 tequilas available to satisfy
any taste from Jose Cuervo Gold to Cazadores to 3 Generaciones.
While Ruelas says he would choose tequilas to go with each
margarita, customers have the final say and know what they like.
The signature drink is the Si
Amigos Margarita, which is served on the rocks with Cazadores
tequila, Tripe Sec, sweet and sour mix, fresh-squeezed orange
and lime juices, and a float of Grand Marnier. The Original
Margarita is another signature drink featuring Sauza tequila,
Conmemorative tequila, Triple Sec and fresh-squeezed lime juice.
Served in a shaker with glass on the side.
“The fresh lime juice is squeezed.
I know what a good margarita tastes like,” says Ruelas, who has
been perfecting his skills for the last 20 years in the
restaurant business.
“Reno is awesome. We win their
trust, by winning their taste. They come back and get up from
their dinner and people want to hug us. That’s what keeps us
motivated,” Ruelas says.
There’s also the Cadillac served
with Jose Cuervo Gold and a float of Grand Marnier, fruit
margaritas in nearly any fruit you can think of, Italian with
Jose Cuervo Gold and a float of Amaretto, and the Blue with Jose
Cuervo Gold and a float of Blue Curacao.
Margaritas are available by the
glass, giant glass or pitcher with the choice of 32 tequilas. Si
Amigos also has 2 for 1 regular margaritas on Thursdays and
half-price second margaritas for premiums tequilas.
While there are signature
margaritas on the menu, Ruelas says everything on the menu is a
specialty.
“We have to be good every time,”
Ruelas says of the expansive menu.
