Sol y Lago:
Innovative Sierra Latino Cuisine

Tahoe City’s hot new restaurant, Sol y Lago, combines Sierra Latino cuisine and spicy music with amazing views of Lake Tahoe. The innovative menu at Sol y Lago draws from the ingredients, flavors and cultures of the Latin world, the mountain regions of Chile and Argentina, and the rugged Basque country of Spain and France.

Internationally acclaimed chef, Johnny Alamilla, and General Manager Brian Reccow, the owners of Sol y Lago, call this globetrotting food “Sierra Latino cuisine,” in honor of the mountain dishes that inspired the menu and the Sierra Nevada range that surrounds the restaurant. Sol y Lago means “sun and lake” in Spanish.

“This cuisine is really different but I think people are hungry to learn and Tahoe City is ripe for a place like this,” said Alamilla. “I’m excited for the opportunity to modernize traditional Latin dishes of my heritage and introduce Nuevo Latino cuisine to the Sierra.” Alamilla and Reccow want to provide food that is delicious and compelling enough for special occasions, but approachable and affordable enough for any night of the week. Every entrée is $19 or less, including grilled Yellowtail Jack with leeks, artichokes, butterball potatoes and sauce aji Amarillo; the “El Capitan” an asado platter for two with pork loin, hanger steak, Portuguese sausage, rib eye steak and achiote chicken breast with mashed potatoes and chimichuri relish; Churrascaria-style pork loin with jicama cabbage slaw and smoked chile jus; and grilled Black Angus rib eye with papas a la pampa, which are thick, cheesy, Au Gratin style potatoes from Argentina.

In keeping with the goal of affordable flavor, appetizers are $8 or less. They include sweet pea empanaditas (small, bite-size empanadas) with a sofrito, made from guajillo chiles; ceviche of black bass, lightly marinated in fresh citrus juices and served with jalapeño tartar sauce; proveleta a la plancha, a Sol y Lago specialty from Argentina in which slices of provoleta cheese are griddled to a bubbling brown and served with crusty bread and an escabeche, a pickle, of sweet onions and carrots; as well as grilled asparagus with guajillo coriander aioli.

Sol y Lago also offers a line-up of fun, finger-friendly bar bites, including yucca fries dusted with cumin and sea salt; chicharrones del pollo, which are spicy chicken strips served with cilantro yogurt; and bowls of nuts flavored with ground annatto, a reddish seed that was central to Mayan cuisine; and another tasty bite, the pappa rellena, a Portuguese sausage and queso fresco filled potato croquette. Bar bites range from $3 to $6. The majestic views of Lake Tahoe from the bar are reason alone to visit…

And don’t miss Sol y Lago’s bread pudding made with banana bread or the chocolate jalapeño gelato, one of Alamilla’s signature dishes.

While the stunning 180-degree panoramic view of Lake Tahoe might be reason enough to visit Sol y Lago, its pioneering food, commitment to excellence in service, and lively atmosphere make it a magnet for savvy diners, local residents and travelers alike.

Located at 760 North Lake Blvd., in the Boatworks Mall in Tahoe City, Sol y Lago is open seven days a week with lunch in summer and nightly for dinner starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturdays, local DJs start spinning at 9 p.m. in the Luna Lounge, and on Sundays, there is live music featuring Flamenco guitar, Jazz and acoustic in the dining room from 6:30 p.m.  For more information or to make a reservation, call (530)583-0358 or visit www.solylago.com.
